the new nationally syndicated RATW show it was something like Marshall Tucker and ELO or some such run-of-the-mill American-English combination.
I saw a copy of your music paper in a Licorice Pizza store the other night with Elvis Costello's name on the cover so 1 picked one up, and it is the most amateurish stream of hype that I have ever laid my hands on. Marc Shapiro's juvenile metaphors on Christian ideals and cooking vessels are so trite it's depressing–his high school creative writing teacher ought to be shot. And Franc Gavin's encapsulation of the Talking Heads sound–Eno-calm/Brian Ferry-cool/Doors Vox organ-chill/Jackson Pollock/European Son/Quelle surprise!–reeks of a vacuous psuedo-intellectualism hitherto unheard of. And what is this meaningless nostalgic drivel from "S.H. Code"?
I know you won't print this letter since you only publish raves from the most mindless slaves to the media, but. I don't care. I seldom write to magazines–most are too mediocre to motivate me–but your commercial affairs are so lame I simply had to let you know. Please don't hold it against me when I tell you I am mentally retarded.

Dear RATW:
Would it be possible to purchase a copy of "Rock Around the World Radio Show" with Tom Petty. I'm desperate to get the thing. What would you like, a new car? Refrigerator? Anything! I swear I wouldn't divulge the fact that I wrote to you people and virtually traded my little brother for one little tiny copy. This record could prove valuable rock and roll insight for future inspirational articles I write. Your programs are the best thing that could happen to FM programming in a long time. Mitchell Hejna

Letters
Apologies . . . to writer Frank Gavin for mangling his March cover story on David Bowie.
Dear RATW:
I'm one of your biggest listeners when it comes to the weekly show you produce called "Rock Around the World" and aired on WCMF-FM. As a music buff, I'm also a T-shirt buff and have collected a large number of shirts from record companies, musical instrument companies, and all down the line. I was wondering whether you have a shirt that advertises your name? If it's possible, I'd be interested in receiving one, if possible.

Dear RATW:
I remember hearing the original "Rock Around The World" radio show the first time it was aired, several years ago on WBCN in Boston. Initially, it made an encouraging attempt to live up to its title, featuring bands from France, Scandinavia, Germany, Japan, and concentrating on the experimental bands that European rock is somewhat known for: Gong, Magma, Can, Supersister . . . The last time I listened to
