Percy Sledge's Place

PERCY SLEDGE's New Release
Blue Night.

You Got Away With Love, Love Come Knocking', Why Did You Stop, I Wish It Would Rain, Blue Night, These Ain't Raindrops, You Love Will Save The World, First You Cry, Going Home, The Grand Boulevard, I've Got Dreams To Remember.

The plump, mellow hipster shown on the back page of this disc's liner booklet looks nothing like the moody young sexpot with the lip-curl who thrilled audiences in the 60's. But Percy Sledge is back, and his voice is as rich with emotion, desperation, and romantic intensity as ever.

There's a new depth to Sledge; like James Carr ( who's also been attempting a comeback recently) who sounds both wounded by time and soothed by the wisdom of maturity. He might have lost just a smidgen of his vocal power, but any wavers or quivers merely bring added vulnerability to what's already one of the most hurt-sounding voices in recorded R & B history.

Album quotes

"The record is impeccable. Saturated with true emotion. Beautiful."
Jerry Wexler

"Percy wraps you in his warm and tender soul."

Barry Gibb, The Bee Gees

"The soul balladeer wraps his exquisite pipes around love songs spirit-lifters and heart-triggers. Passion and R&B authenticity."

Edna Gundersen, USA Today

"This is the Memphis sound."

Lloyd Sachs, Chicago Sun Times (4 star review)

"The best Southern soul heard in years."

Geoff Brown, VOX (U.K.)

"The sound of mid-60's soul. The horns, the bittersweet strings and most of all the classy new songs will leave Southern soul casualties drooling."

Johnny Black, Q (U.K.)

"This is the real thing: the backing vocals soar like the proverbial lark, the horns swirl and the instrumentation is solid. Good album, good songs, good music, good voice. Good Golly Miss Molly."

Jim Driver, Time Out (U.K.)

"A beautiful soul album."

Amy Linden, VH1/Four On The Floor, N.Y. TImes, San Francisco Chronicle
