Martin has been named the musical director of the Sgt. Pepper movie starring Peter Frampton and The Bee Gees. As MD, George will be responsible for the film’s soundtrack … there’s only three slots for tenant’s names in the entrance of the elegant brownstone on 5th Avenue in New York-one reads “Super,” one “Smith” and the third is blank. So what, you say? Well, so nothing, really, except that this particular brownstone belongs to the Jaggers, Mick and Bianca. Mick, who views himself as a true citizen of the world, has domiciles in many parts of the globe, but buying a piece of Manhattan with a 5th Avenue address must be a coup for even the Midnight Rambler himself .. meanwhile, down the road a ways, Atlantic’s studios are being used every night by all the Rolling Stones, including Keith Richard … nobody’s been doing any shouting (unlike the last time), but slowly Liverpool is becoming a hotbed of new bands again … the recent successes of Deaf School, Supercharge and Nasty Pop reinforces Liverpool’s reputation as a city whose musicians view life with the proper grains of salt … one whose taste for living is all-consuming, Frankie Miller, will be touring America this summer–finally. An excellent new album, titled “Full House,” is getting lots of airplay at this juncture, and for once it appears that Frankie Miller is indeed holding a full house–best of luck, Frankie … before leaving for the States. though, Frankie put the finishing touches to his part of “The King of Elfland’s Daughter,” an electronic fantasy album set for release quite soon. In addition to
Frankie Miller, the 1p features performances by Chrisopher Lee, Chris Farlowe, Mary Hopkin, and Alex Korner, among others … a tea party it isn’t, but both Denny Laine and Paul McCartney remember their picnics and such in an album called “Holly Days:” actually Denny Laine’s tribute to Buddy Holly, “Holly Days” was kept close to the original arrangements and feeling of Buddy Holly’s songs … aaah, memories … more encouraging reviews on “Flash of The Moment” by Pastiche (with our own Mr. Curt) coming in–England’s New Music Express rated it as having the bite of The Who and quite good overall, and now comes news of a possible album … oh boy. wait! … Three On A Match Dept.: just like a sniper in WWI was able to pick his target and hit it (third soldier) after spotting the flare of a match being lit (first soldier) and aiming his rifle (second soldier), The Sex Pistols are taking aim at the public via their third record company, Virgin Records; “God Save The Queen,” the single that hasn’t made it to the shops yet, is set for release, as is an album. A lot of bad press about The Pistols is going to make Virgin’s job that much more difficult, but the feeling is that if they can’t handle the band and everything that goes with it, then probably no company can … another Virgin Band. Germany’s Tangerine Dream, undertake the second leg of their North American tour in July, and have also scored William Friedkin’s new movie “The Sorcerer”–it’s about time that the film community has fully accepted and utilized the vast talents of the music community … it’s also nice to see that The Beatles’ Hamburg Tapes, recorded in 1962, have finally been released; given the outstanding success of the Hollywood Bowl album, the Hamburg Tapes provide an interesting counterpoint to the success that was to follow for The Fab Four … one of the new music’s most promising new collaborations is the one consisting of Hugh Hopper, Elton Dean (both ex-Soft Machine). Keith Tippett and Joe Gallivan (ex-Nrbq); the band has an album out titled “Cruel But Fair” that proves that jazz-rock can stand on its own as a popular entertainment
form. Well done, lads … a September tour of the States is in the offing for Eddie & The Hot Rods, and perhaps some dates over here as well for Ultravox . . . look for the release of a promising new album by a band called Metro in this country soon .. as you read this, Brand X will be on tour in America, something that wasn’t originally planned by the group. They’ll be doing a variety of dates, minus Phil “On The Road Again” Collins, and are most worthy of your attention, dear reader. A replacement drummer for young Phil will be chosen for the tour. … Bryan Ferry’s band now said to include Phil Manzanera
